Start with a job, not a general-purpose AI
The safest first AI worker is not one that “runs the business.” It is one with a narrow job, clear inputs, and a defined point where a person takes over. Four useful starting roles are a receptionist, estimator, follow-up manager and operations assistant.
1. AI receptionist
A receptionist can collect basic information, answer approved questions, route requests and prepare a callback. Its authority should stop before it makes promises, changes appointments, discusses sensitive information or represents an uncertain answer as fact. When the request falls outside its approved knowledge, it should ask first or hand off.
2. AI estimator
An estimator can organize the information needed for a first quote: scope, measurements, materials, photos and missing details. It can apply approved rules and prepare a draft estimate for review.
